TikTok Creator Score explained: how we score out of 100

How the TikTok creator score works: engagement 35, virality 25, reach 20, consistency 10, health 10. The formulas, the benchmarks and the verdicts.

This is the methodology page for the score you get when you scan a creator. It's a scoring layer on top of the metrics in our TikTok engagement rate guide, and it's meant to be checked, not trusted blindly. Everything here comes straight from the code that computes the score. If the code changes, this page changes.

What is the TikTok creator score?

It's a quick answer to one question: do this creator's public numbers hold up? It looks at a creator's recent videos and asks five things.

  • Do people react to the posts? (Engagement)
  • Does the creator break out sometimes? (Virality)
  • Do followers still watch? (Reach)
  • Does the creator post regularly? (Consistency)
  • Is anything suppressing their recent posts? (Health)

Each part is scored as a ratio, capped at 1, then multiplied by its points and rounded to whole points. So the parts on your receipt always add up to the total.

How each part of the score works

Engagement (35 points)

The creator's engagement rate, measured against a benchmark for their follower tier. Full points go to a creator at 1.5 times the benchmark or higher. A creator exactly at the benchmark gets two thirds of the points, about 23.

The benchmark today uses engagement per follower. Why it's per follower and not per view, and why that matters, is covered in engagement rate vs views.

Virality (25 points)

A viral hit is a video with more than 5 times the account's median views. The score takes the share of recent videos that are viral hits and gives full points at one in five. A creator with no breakouts scores zero here, and that's fine if the rest holds up. Steady creators can still reach Proceed.

Reach (20 points)

Recent average views divided by followers. Full points at 20%: a creator with 100K followers whose recent videos average 20K views or more. This is the part that catches an audience that stopped watching, or was never real. It's also what stands in for a fake-follower check, explained in our fake followers check for TikTok.

Consistency (10 points)

A 0 to 100 posting-consistency score from our data provider, divided by 100. Creators who post on a steady rhythm score high. Long gaps pull it down.

Health (10 points)

Our data provider's shadow-ban risk rating: Low earns 10, Medium 5, High 0. We use the rating as given. It's worth only 10 points on purpose, because nobody outside TikTok can confirm a shadow ban.

What do Proceed, Caution and Avoid mean?

ScoreVerdictWhat to do
70 to 100ProceedThe public numbers hold up. Move on to audience, past ads and terms.
40 to 69CautionFind the part that lost points and ask the creator about it.
0 to 39AvoidThe public numbers don't support a paid deal right now.

A verdict is about the numbers, not the person. Proceed doesn't mean a post will sell, and Avoid doesn't mean a creator is dishonest. It means their recent public numbers don't justify paying them yet. The checks that come after the score are in our influencer vetting checklist.

The engagement benchmarks by follower tier

Follower tierBenchmark ER (per follower)Full engagement points at
Under 10K10%15%
10K to 100K6%9%
100K to 1M3%4.5%
Over 1M2%3%

Plainly: these are starting values, not our data. They're the rough middle of public 2025 TikTok benchmarks measured per follower, and those benchmarks disagree with each other by about 2x. They also measure different things. Rival IQ's 2025 benchmark report puts the median brand account at 1.73% per follower. Socialinsider's TikTok benchmarks put 2025 engagement at 4.20% per view. Neither is wrong. They answer different questions.

Two things replace the starting values. First, the score is being checked against about 30 creators our team has worked with, and tuned until the verdicts match what happened. Second, once our creator database is loaded, the median for each tier replaces the number in this table. When that happens, this page gets updated with the sample size and dates.

A worked example

A made-up creator, to show the maths. 50K followers puts them in the 10K to 100K tier, so the benchmark is 6%.

PartTheir numberPoints
Engagement4.5% per follower. 4.5 ÷ 9 = 0.518 of 35
Virality2 viral hits in 15 videos. 0.133 ÷ 0.2 = 0.6717 of 25
Reach6,000 recent average views. 0.12 ÷ 0.2 = 0.612 of 20
Consistency707 of 10
HealthLow risk10 of 10
Total64: Caution

Six points short of Proceed. The receipt shows where: engagement is below the tier benchmark and reach is middling. The next question for this creator is why recent views sit at 12% of their followers. Scan a real handle and you get the same breakdown for any public TikTok account.

What the score can't see

The score only knows public numbers. It doesn't see a creator's audience countries or ages, how their past sponsored posts converted, what their comments actually say, or whether your product suits their audience. It can't show sales.

There are two more limits worth knowing. If a scan can only pull the profile and not the recent videos, you get the profile without a score, rather than a score built on missing data. And private accounts can't be scored at all.

InfluencerYaps built the score to cut a long list down fast and to show its working. Use it to decide who deserves a closer look, then do the closer look.
