Spark Ads are how a creator post that worked becomes paid reach without losing what made it work: the face, the voice, the comment section. They sit downstream of creator sourcing. Whether you found the creator through the TikTok Creator Marketplace or your own outreach, Spark Ads are how you put budget behind the result.
What are Spark Ads on TikTok?
A Spark Ad is a boosted organic post. TikTok calls it a native ad format that keeps attribution with the original post, per its About Spark Ads help page. Three things set it apart from a normal in-feed ad:
- It shows the original account. Tap the name and you land on the creator's profile, not a brand ad page.
- Engagement stays on the post. Paid likes, comments and shares count on the organic video, so the social proof keeps building after the campaign ends.
- It can be any eligible post. Your brand's own video, a creator's sponsored post, or a customer's video you got permission to use.
On other platforms this is called influencer whitelisting. We cover the cross-platform version, including Meta partnership ads and the contract terms, in influencer whitelisting.
Spark Ads vs regular TikTok in-feed ads
| Spark Ads | Standard in-feed ads | |
|---|---|---|
| Source | An existing organic post | A video uploaded to Ads Manager |
| Shown under | The original account's handle | The brand's ad identity |
| Engagement goes to | The organic post | The ad only |
| Permission needed | Creator authorization code or request | None beyond usage rights |
| Profile and comments | Live, public, on the creator's account | Ad-only |
The performance case comes from TikTok itself. Its Spark Ads 101 cites 2022 internal A/B tests: a 134% higher completion rate and a 157% higher 6-second view-through rate than standard in-feed ads. That's TikTok testing its own product, and your results will depend on the post. Treat it as a reason to test, not a forecast.
How do Spark Ads codes work?
The creator authorizes a specific post. Two ways to do it:
1. The creator sends a code. Per TikTok Ads Manager help as of October 2026:
- The creator opens the video, taps the three dots, then Ad settings.
- They agree to the terms and turn on ad authorization.
- They pick a duration: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days.
- They tap Copy Code and send it to you.
- In Ads Manager, you open the Creative Library, choose Spark Ads posts, click Apply for Authorization and paste the code.
2. You send a request in-app. TikTok's Content Suite lets brands request authorization from inside TikTok, and those requests default to 365 days. Creators can also grant account-level authorization, which covers more than one post.
Duets can need codes from both creators. Ask for both up front.
Spark Ads mistakes that cost brands money
- Short codes on long campaigns. A 30-day code on a 90-day flight means your best ad stops on day 30. Ask for the length you need, priced into the deal.
- Asking after the post blows up. A creator whose video just went viral knows what it's worth. Write Spark Ads access into the original brief.
- Boosting posts nobody watched. Paid reach magnifies what a post already does. If the organic version stalled, test a different post first. Our breakdown of engagement rate vs views on TikTok covers what to look for.
- Forgetting the comments. Comments from paid reach land on the creator's post. Agree who moderates and how fast before spend starts.
- Creators deleting the video. TikTok says a video has to be un-authorized as a Spark Ad before it can be deleted. Even so, write a minimum live period into the contract.
- Missing disclosure. Spark Ads show as sponsored, but a paid creator post still needs TikTok's branded content toggle and a clear #ad under the FTC's influencer disclosure guidance.
How much do TikTok Spark Ads cost?
Two separate costs:
- Media. Spark Ads run in the normal TikTok ad auction. You pay what the market charges for impressions or results, and that changes by audience, season and goal. As of October 2026, TikTok's budget rules require daily budgets over $50 at campaign level and over $20 per ad group.
- Creator access. Most creators charge for Spark Ads authorization on top of the post fee, priced by duration. There's no public rate card. See current post rates in TikTok influencer rates, and expect a 365-day code to cost more than a 30-day one.
Our view: buy 30 or 60 days on a creator post, run it at a small budget, and extend only the posts that earn it. Paying for a year of access on a video you haven't tested is guessing with a contract attached.
When do Spark Ads make sense?
- You have creator posts that already performed and want more of the same people to see them.
- You sell on TikTok Shop. Spark Ads can run as video shopping ads, so a creator's shoppable post becomes a paid one.
- Your brand ads look like ads. Spark Ads let the creator's style do the work.
- You're testing hooks. Run several creator posts at small budgets, then move budget to the winner.
They make less sense when you have no creator content yet. Start with the creators, then the ads. The hardest part is picking creators whose posts are worth paying to push. If you want that shortlist built by hand, send us a brief with the product, budget, a competitor and the niche.
FAQ
Spark Ads are TikTok ads made from real organic posts, either from your own account or a creator's account with their permission. The ad shows the original handle, and likes, comments and shares from the ad count on the original post. They are TikTok's version of influencer whitelisting.
As of October 2026, creators choose 7, 30, 60 or 365 days when they generate the code in the video's ad settings. Requests sent through TikTok's Content Suite default to 365 days. When authorization ends, the ad can no longer run with that post, so match the length to your plan.
Spark Ads use the same auction as other TikTok ads, so you pay for impressions or results at whatever the market charges. As of October 2026 TikTok requires campaign budgets over $50 a day and ad group budgets over $20 a day. Paying the creator for ad access is a separate cost.
Yes. TikTok labels Spark Ads as sponsored in the feed. If the post is a paid creator partnership, it should also carry TikTok's branded content toggle and a clear #ad in the US, in line with the FTC's endorsement guidance for influencers.
Not while it's authorized. TikTok's help center says a video must be un-authorized as a Spark Ad before it can be deleted from the organic account. Put the post's minimum live period and the authorization window in the contract so the ad doesn't vanish mid-campaign.
