Instagram influencer marketing: where it still beats TikTok

Instagram influencer marketing in 2026: where it beats TikTok, which formats to buy, how partnership ads work, and how to find creators worth paying.

Influencer Marketing Hub's 2026 benchmark report found TikTok was the most selected platform in brands' influencer plans. That doesn't make Instagram the wrong choice. It makes it the less crowded one for some goals. This page sits in our TikTok hub because most brands now choose between the two, so read it next to our guide to TikTok Creator Marketplace and TikTok One.

Where Instagram still beats TikTok for influencer marketing

Instagram wins on what happens after the first view. TikTok is very good at getting a video in front of strangers. Instagram is better at turning a viewer into a follower, a click or a DM.

In our experience, Instagram tends to suit:

  • Higher-priced products where buyers want to see the thing several times before paying.
  • Local businesses like restaurants, salons and gyms. Location tags and Stories do the work.
  • Fashion, home and travel, where the carousel and the saved post are how people shop.

TikTok tends to suit impulse buys under about the price of a takeaway, products that demo well in 15 seconds, and brands that want to test many hooks fast. For the TikTok side, see TikTok influencer marketing: the brand guide.

Which Instagram formats should you pay for?

Buy formats for what they do, not because the creator's rate card lists them.

  • Reels. Your reach format. Reels are recommended to non-followers, so they behave most like TikTok. Meta said at the IAB NewFronts in May 2025 that Reels see 4.5 billion reshares a day.
  • Stories. Your click format. They reach the creator's existing followers, they disappear in 24 hours, and the link sticker sends people straight to you. Ask for Story view counts, not just follower counts.
  • Carousels. Your comparison format. Good for "5 ways to wear it" or before and after. They get saved.
  • Collab posts. A single post that shows on both the creator's and your profile, so you keep it on your grid.
  • Lives. Good for launches with a creator who sells well live. Rarely worth it for a first deal.

A sensible first deal: one Reel, a set of three Stories with a link sticker, and the right to run the Reel as a partnership ad for 30 days.

How do partnership ads work on Instagram?

Partnership ads run a creator's post as a paid ad, shown from the creator's handle with your brand alongside. They're Instagram's answer to Spark Ads. The creator grants permission, then you run the ad from your own ad account.

According to Meta's internal data, reported by Net Influencer in June 2026, partnership ads delivered a 19% lower cost per acquisition and a 13% higher click-through rate than standard campaigns. That's Meta's number on Meta's product, so test it on your own account before you plan around it.

What to agree in the contract:

  • Duration. How long you can run the ad. 30 to 90 days is common.
  • Edits. Whether you can trim or add captions.
  • Exclusivity. Whether they can work with a competitor while your ad runs.
  • Disclosure. The paid partnership label on the organic post, plus #ad.

This is a form of whitelisting. The full mechanics and pricing questions are in influencer whitelisting.

How Meta's creator marketplace changes discovery

Meta's creator marketplace lets brands search Instagram creators who have opted in to paid work, message them and set up partnership ads. As of October 2026:

  • Meta opened the marketplace to businesses worldwide in early 2026, after it had been limited to 19 countries.
  • At Cannes Lions in June 2026, Meta said it would merge the marketplace and its partnership ads hub into one Meta Creator Marketing Hub, add Facebook creators, and that more than 5 million Instagram creators were already discoverable, per the same Net Influencer report.

It's the Instagram equivalent of TikTok One: first-party data on opted-in creators, built around ads. Same limit, too. Creators who never opted in don't show up, and it won't tell you which creators to avoid.

How to find Instagram influencers worth paying

Follower counts on Instagram are older and stickier than on TikTok. Many accounts grew years ago and kept followers who stopped watching. So the numbers to check are recent ones:

  1. Median Reel views across the last 12 Reels, not the best one.
  2. Story views. Ask for a screen recording of the last week's Stories insights. A healthy Story audience is the clearest sign followers are still there.
  3. Comments that sound like customers. Questions about price, size, where to buy.
  4. Ad load. Count sponsored posts in the last month.
  5. Audience location and age, from a screen recording of their insights.

Smaller accounts often do best here. On Instagram, micro creators tend to have closer audiences and answer their DMs. The step-by-step method is in how to find micro-influencers on Instagram, and the wider case is in our guide to micro-influencers.

The slow part is building the first list. Hashtag search on Instagram is noisy and shows no numbers. You can search Instagram and TikTok creators by niche, country and follower count and get 200 rows free with no signup, then do the checks above on the shortlist.

What do Instagram influencers charge?

Rates depend on format, usage rights and recent views more than followers. A Reel with 90 days of ad rights costs more than a Story set with none. Rates move with niche and season. For current ranges by tier, see influencer rates by follower count.

Two rules we use: pay for usage rights separately, so you know what you're buying, and never pay on follower count alone. Public numbers can't show whether a creator's audience buys. A test with a code or a tracked link is the only way to find out.
