TikTok influencer marketing: the brand guide

Influencer marketing on TikTok, start to finish: goals, finding and vetting creators, briefs, rates, disclosure, Spark Ads and what to measure.

TikTok rewards a different kind of creator content than Instagram or YouTube. Posts travel on the For You feed, not just to followers, so a small creator can outdraw a big one on any given day. That makes TikTok cheaper to test and harder to predict. This guide is the brand-side playbook, step by step. For the tools TikTok itself offers brands, see our hub on TikTok Creator Marketplace.

Why do brands use influencer marketing on TikTok?

Three reasons, in order of how often we hear them:

  1. Reach without follower counts. The For You feed shows videos to people who don't follow the creator. A good video can find your customer even if the creator is small.
  2. Content that works as ads. Creator videos tend to look native in the feed. Brands run them as Spark Ads and often find them cheaper per result than studio ads.
  3. Commerce in the app. With TikTok Shop, a viewer can buy without leaving the video. Creators can earn commission on sales, which changes how deals are priced.

And one reason to be careful: TikTok views are spiky. One post does ten times the creator's median, the next does a fifth. Plan on medians, not highlights.

A note on the US: the deal creating TikTok's US joint venture closed in January 2026 (CNN, 2026). As of October 2026, ad buying and creator tools run as before.

Step 1: pick one goal and one number

Pick a single goal per campaign. Mixed goals produce mushy briefs and reports nobody trusts.

GoalWhat to measureCreator type that tends to fit
AwarenessViews against the creator's median, cost per thousand viewsMid-size creators with steady views
ConsiderationSaves, shares, product questions in commentsNiche experts and reviewers
SalesCode redemptions, link clicks, TikTok Shop ordersCreators who already sell in their posts
Ad creativeSpark Ad cost per result against your other adsCreators with strong hooks, any size

The "ad creative" goal is underrated. Some brands now hire creators mainly for videos to run as ads, and care less about the organic post.

Step 2: find TikTok creators who fit

Start from your customer, not from follower counts. Who does your buyer already watch? Search the hashtags and terms they use, check who your competitors pay, and read the comments under posts in your niche.

The full method, including search filters and how to build a shortlist fast, is in how to find TikTok influencers. The short version:

  • Look at the last 12 posts, not the pinned ones. Pinned posts are the creator's greatest hits.
  • Write down median views. That's the number you're paying for.
  • Check the comments. Real questions beat walls of emojis.
  • Count the ads. If half the feed is sponsored, the audience has stopped listening.

Before money moves, run the checks in how to vet a TikTok creator. On engagement benchmarks, which vary by size and niche, see TikTok engagement rate.

Step 3: brief creators, then step back

A TikTok brief should fit on one page. Creators know their audience better than you do. Your job is to tell them what must be true, not how to film it.

Put in:

  • The product and the one thing it does better. One message, not five.
  • Who it's for. In plain words.
  • Must-says and can't-says. Claims your lawyers allow, and the ones they don't.
  • Deliverables and dates. Number of videos, draft date, post date, revision rounds.
  • Usage rights. Whether you can run it as a Spark Ad, and for how long.
  • Disclosure. The paid partnership label, every time.

Leave out scripts. A scripted TikTok looks like an ad and gets scrolled past like one. Our influencer brief post has a template.

Step 4: agree rates, rights and disclosure

TikTok rates depend on views, niche, deliverables and usage rights more than on follower count. They move month to month. We keep current ranges in TikTok influencer rates, so we won't repeat stale numbers here.

Three pricing models are common:

  • Flat fee per video. Simple. You carry the risk if it flops.
  • Product only (gifting). Fine for nano creators, rude for anyone doing this for a living.
  • Commission, often through TikTok Shop's affiliate program. Low risk for you, and creators with proven sales may prefer it. Many will ask for a fee plus commission.

Disclosure isn't optional. The FTC's guide for influencers says any material connection, including free product, must be disclosed clearly. TikTok's Branded Content Policy requires creators to switch on the commercial content disclosure setting, which adds a paid partnership label. Ask for #ad in the caption too. Put both in the contract.

Step 5: amplify the winners with Spark Ads

Organic posts get one shot on the feed. Spark Ads let you put paid reach behind a creator's post while it still shows from their account, with their name, comments and likes intact. The creator authorizes it with a code, or through TikTok One if you ran the deal there.

The play: let five posts run organically for a few days, look at views against each creator's median, then put budget behind the two that beat it. It's cheaper than guessing upfront. How it works and what to agree in the contract is in TikTok Spark Ads.

Step 6: measure what you can, admit what you can't

Report each creator against their own median, not against each other. A creator with modest views who beat their median by a lot did their job better than a big creator who came in under.

Track:

  • Views against the creator's median
  • Engagement per view, plus saves and shares
  • Product comments: questions about price, shade, size, where to buy
  • Business results: code redemptions, link clicks, Shop orders, branded search

Public engagement can't show sales. If you didn't set up codes, links or Shop tracking before the post went live, you'll be guessing afterwards. Set them up first.
