"Micro or macro?" is really a question about what you're buying. Micro creators sell attention from a tight niche at a low price. Macro creators sell reach, fast, at a higher price and with more middlemen. Both can be a good deal or a bad one. The difference is in the numbers you check before you pay. For the full picture of the smaller tier, see our micro-influencers guide.

What is the difference between micro and macro influencers?

Tier bands aren't standard. Influencer Marketing Hub's micro rate guide uses 10K to 100K followers for micro, and its macro-influencer rate guide uses 100K to 1M for macro. Its general rate guide draws the lines differently. Use whichever bands you like, but use the same ones for every creator you compare.

Rates are from Influencer Marketing Hub's micro and macro rate guides, both updated July 2026. They vary by niche and rights, and they move monthly.

Notice the platform gap. On Instagram, a macro feed post can cost ten to thirty times a micro post. On TikTok, the published ranges overlap. That's because TikTok distributes through the For You feed, so follower count predicts views less well, and pricing has followed.

For every tier side by side, see influencer rates by follower count.

Which gets better engagement, micro or macro?

Micro, as a rate, most of the time. Two sources worth knowing:

  • A 2023 Journal of Marketing study by Wies, Bleier and Edeling analysed 802 Instagram campaigns featuring more than 1,700 influencers. Engagement with sponsored posts rose with follower count, then fell. The authors' explanation: a bigger following signals a weaker personal relationship, so each follower is less likely to react.
  • HypeAuditor's State of Influencer Marketing 2025 found the smallest creators had the highest engagement rate of any tier on both Instagram and TikTok.

Two cautions. First, a higher rate isn't more engagement in total: 5% of 30K is less than 2% of 500K. Second, engagement rate formulas differ, so check whether a number is per view or per follower before you compare. Our guide to what a good engagement rate on TikTok is covers the formulas and benchmarks.

Which delivers more per dollar?

The fair way to compare is cost per 1,000 views:

Fee ÷ median views on recent posts × 1,000

Use the median of the last 12 non-pinned posts, not the average and not the follower count. Here's an illustrative example. The numbers are made up to show the maths, not benchmarks:

CreatorFeeMedian viewsCost per 1,000 views
Micro A, 40K followers$60025,000$24
Micro B, 60K followers$8004,000$200
Macro C, 600K followers$4,000150,000$26.67

The lesson: size doesn't decide value, views do. Micro A and Macro C cost about the same per view. Micro B, with more followers than A, is the worst deal on the list. You'd never see that by looking at follower counts.

Then add the things the maths misses:

  • Audience fit. Cheap views from the wrong country or age group are expensive views.
  • Comment quality. Questions about the product beat emoji walls.
  • Tests per dollar. $4,000 buys one macro post, or several micro posts with different angles. Several posts teach you more.
  • Admin. Five micro deals is five briefs, contracts and invoices. Budget the time.

Working out median views by hand for every creator on a shortlist is slow. Scan any TikTok handle free to get recent views, engagement and a 0 to 100 score that compares the creator with others in their follower tier. Pricing, audience fit and the contract are still your call.

When to choose micro, when to choose macro

Choose micro when:

  • You're testing a product, an angle or a niche.
  • You want lots of content for ads.
  • Your budget is under a few thousand dollars.
  • Your product needs a demo or explanation that a niche audience values.

Choose macro when:

  • You have a launch date and need mass reach that week.
  • You've already found a message that works and want to scale it.
  • You have someone to handle managers, longer contracts and approvals.

Mix them when you can. A common shape: most of the budget across a group of micro creators, then one or two larger creators repeating the message that won. Micro finds the angle. Macro amplifies it.

What public numbers can't tell you

Views and engagement are public. Sales aren't. Neither tier comes with proof it will sell your product. Give every creator their own code or tracked link, compare cost per sale after the campaign, and rebook on that. Our engagement rate vs views explainer covers which public number to trust for which decision.
